Feel the beat of Rio!

Saturday 27th September
10.30 - 17:00

rhythm Stick Drumming's Bi-annual guest workshop with JP Percussion

Join the vibrant JP Courtney (Managing Director of JP Percussion Ltd and Director of Carnaval Transatlantico) for an electrifying day of samba grooves, carnival beats, and irresistible rhythms straight from the heart of Rio de Janeiro. Dive into the sounds that pulse through the clubs, bars, and streets of the world’s carnival capital.

Known not only for his world-class percussion skills but also for his laid-back, humorous style, JP makes learning fun, energizing, and unforgettable. The day is aimed at any level of percussionist, from beginner to professional.

We’ll kick things off by getting hands-on with the three essential rhythms that form the foundation of samba. From there, we’ll explore how these grooves come alive across the different instruments of the bateria—just like in Brazil’s street parades. Together, we’ll build up a vibrant arrangement of a classic Rio carnival samba, adding in vocals and layering rich rhythmic textures.

Adding an exciting twist to the day, JP is joined by the incredibly talented UK string player Andy Carter. With Andy’s strings and the energy of live vocals, we’ll bring the infectious spirit of modern Rio carnival to life.

Whether you’re a seasoned percussionist or just samba-curious, this is your chance to experience the joy, rhythm, and magic of Rio—right here, for one unforgettable day.
