rhythm Stick Drumming's annual guest workshop with Mika De Oliveira
director of art brasil, staffordshire
Join us for a special workshop day to explore the rhythms of Candomblé - the Orixá culture of Brazil.
Our workshop will begin with techniques and rhythms for the traditional ensemble of atabaque/conga hand drums and bells. The atabaque rhythms are played in different ways - with the hands, with two sticks, or one stick one hand - and we'll cover a variety of rhythms to include these 3 different techniques of playing. No experience of hand/stick drumming is necessary as the rhythms can be built up in stages, so everyone can work at their own level.
Later on, we'll move onto playing your usual carnival drums and we'll look at how these rhythms can work in the context of the samba bateria. The day is an opportunity to study and celebrate the rich history of Brazilian percussion and, most importantly, have a laugh doing it!

What instrument will I play?
The first half you will be working in pairs, one with a traditional Atabaqué or a conga and the other with a bell and you will have the chance to play both instruments. In the second half you will play a more traditional Samba percussion instrument that you would usually play in your band (surdo, caixa, chocalho, agogo, tamborim, repinique)
Who is it for?
Band members and adults with an interest in drumming.
Accompanied children aged over 10.
The workshop is a mixture of seated and standing but there are options for those who need to play seated throughout.
